PS5 April Update brings new storage options and social features

First major PS5 console update lets you store PS5 games on USB extended storage, share gameplay across PS5 and PS4 consoles, and more.

The first major system software update for the PS5 console is rolling out globally tomorrow, and it’s packed with new features and improvements. Our team is passionate about enhancing your experience on PlayStation in every possible way, so here’s a glimpse at what’s coming for PS5, PS4, and PlayStation App:

PS5 Storage Expansion and Management

  • Store PS5 Games on Compatible External USB Drives.* With this feature, you can now transfer your PS5 games to USB extended storage from your console’s internal storage. It’s a great way to extend the storage capabilities of your PS5 console, and you can seamlessly copy your PS5 games back to the console’s internal storage when you’re ready to play. It is faster to reinstall PS5 games from USB extended storage than to re-download or copy them from a disc.

Game PS5 restock today sold out: What time and how to buy Sony’s elusive console

Update: The PS5 is now sold out at Game after an hour an a half. We may still see another drop at Very today if you failed to secure one.

The Sony PlayStation 5 has been sold out right across the country ever since it first launched in November. The scramble to acquire one has become so frantic that it’s birthed a whole new generation of PS5 stock trackers, passing on whispers of potential stock drops.

But that is all about to change. After a dreadful month of PS5 stock drops throughout April, Game had a massive drop last week which lasted a lengthy hour and a half. Now, we are about to see even more consoles dropping online this week, plus there’s even more bundles on offer.

Game is due to drop a large number of PS5 consoles and bundles onto its website this week, potentially starting at 9am in the morning.

Last week’s drop follows a bumper crop of PS5 consoles which landed on Argos’s virtual shelves in the early hours of 11 May, a date and time correctly predicted by the Twitter account @PS5StockAlertUK – who also predicted the Game drop.

To find out how you can pick up the PS5 from Game, including what bundles will be on offer, keep on reading.

Sony’s new PS5 beta update also fixes one of its silliest flaws

The first major system update for Sony’s PlayStation 5 is arriving in beta form today, finally letting you expand the console’s 667GB of usable storage by adding your own PCIe Gen 4 SSD as well as testing new UI options and expanding 3D Audio support. But the full changelog also includes a few features that Sony didn’t highlight to press — including a way to easily update your DualSense controller if you press the wrong button!

You see, the PS5 currently has a very silly flaw: the only time you can update your controller is when you boot the console. And if you say no or accidentally press the O button instead of X, you can’t trigger that update until 24 hours have passed (or you tweak your PS5’s internal clock to cheat it).

But in Beta 2.0, there’s now a dedicated menu for that under Settings > Accessories > Controllers called Wireless Controller Device Software. Please forgive my grainy photo.

You’ll still see controller update prompts when you launch the console, too — and hitting the circle button will still instantly dismiss them.
